Ben's Day Out

An Dinh

It's been a year since Ben wet a line.  A whole year!  Moving into a new home, a new kid and traveling for work,  time just got away from him.  We were hoping for an epic day on the water.

Fate was not on our side.  We should have recognized the signs as we drove the long 4 hours to find a stream that wasn't blown out.  We passed a camp of boy scouts, who would later be found wading through our best fishiest water.

Usually the parking area is empty or at most has one truck ahead of us.  But today is was full.  Full of fisherman from a fly fishing club in Salt Lake.  Ugh!

I usually don't fish on a Saturday so I don't have to worry about crowds.

It took a few casts, but Ben got right up to speed.  After a switching up flies he got into some nice fish.

The bigger parachute was easier on the eyes.

Since the fish had been spooked by all the traffic, we needed to fish New Zealand style.  I worked as a spotter and located trout that were actively feeding, while Ben snuck up and cast to the hot spots.

This fish went berserk when it was hooked.

This fish...

did not want...

did not want...

to be caught!

to be caught!

(Ben screams)

(Ben screams)

Ben regains control of the situation.

for the moment...

a slap in the face!

a slap in the face!

She was a long 18 inch beauty.  Slender and graceful.

Happy Birthday Ben!  We didn't catch as many fish as we were expecting but we got into much bigger and energetic fish than usual.
