Bud's Fly #1 BWO Soft Hackle Swinger

An Dinh

Here is a size 18 blue wing olive soft hackle using materials from

Bud's vintage fly tying supplies.

This pattern works great on the middle Provo when swung.  I like to dead drift it first then swing it slowly through a seam.  The slight violet shade of this hackle will surely draw some strikes and the slim quill body looks just like the naturals.

Hook:  dry fly hook size 18

Thread: 8/0 olive green

Tail:  10-12 fibers from the webby end of a light blue gray saddle feather

Body:  Quill body from a Peacock herl dyed light olive with herl removed

Hackle: 3-4 turns of the light blue gray saddle feather

Head: Tying thread

Adhesive:  Clear cure goo UV resin

I also tied a Pale Morning Dun version with ginger hackle and I used a yellow sharpie to color the quill body before wrapping it.
